Tradescantia fluminensis ‘Albovittata’, also known as Inch Plant, is a fast-growing evergreen trailing houseplant. Native to South America (from Brazil to northern Argentina), it forms an attractive groundcover or a cascading display in hanging baskets. The fleshy, oval leaves are green with white stripes and have a purple underside. Foliage typically grows up to 15 cm high and can spread over 60 cm or more if allowed. Although it may flower in its native habitat, indoor blooms are rare and the plant is mainly valued for its striking foliage. Growing Conditions: Temperature: Suitable for areas comparable to UK hardiness H1B–H2 (similar to USDA Zones 9–12). Not frost-hardy – keep indoors or in a heated greenhouse over winter. Light: Prefers bright, filtered light. Tolerates shade but avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun which may scorch the leaves. Soil: Use a peat- or coir-based potting mix that is moisture-retentive yet free-draining. Watering: Keep the compost consistently moist in spring and summer, reducing watering during autumn and winter. Maintenance: Pinch back stems to promote dense growth. Can be pruned hard in early spring if needed. Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Plants can be placed outdoors in summer. Problems: Overwatering may cause root rot. Watch for common houseplant pests such as mealybug, scale, whitefly, and spider mite. Background: The genus Tradescantia was named in honour of John Tradescant (1570–1638) and his son John Tradescant (1608–1662), both notable English botanists and gardeners to King Charles I. The specific name fluminensis refers to the River January (Rio de Janeiro) region of Brazil where this species originates. The cultivar name ‘Albovittata’ is derived from Latin alba (white) and vittata (banded), describing its distinctive striped leaves. Uses: Ideal as a trailing houseplant for shelves or hanging baskets. Can also be grown outdoors in frost-free areas as groundcover or in rock gardens. Key Features: Attractive variegated foliage with green, white and purple tones Fast-growing and easy to care for Suitable for indoor or summer patio display Easy to propagate by cuttings
